ARGYLL—Inside all of us is an urge to escape to our land of origin. For Harley, an 8-year-old Westie from Dearborn, that dream came true recently when he visited the West Highlands of Scotland.
“It was everything I imagined. Castles, sheep, people, moors, sheep,” said Harley. “Scotland was delightful. Way more to smell than I had time to enjoy.”
Days in Scotland can be spent loping across fields of gorse; snooping in musty, ancient castles; and discovering aromas that can only be found here—mold, old wool, soggy peat and rotting bagpipe, to name just a few.
Besides taking in the popular dog sites, every Westie should make a point of visiting Poltalloch in the Argyll region. There, you can see where Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm bred the first West Highland Terriers. “I was so moved by seeing the birthplace of my breed, I lifted my leg twice on the marker,” Harley solemnly reflected. “But the second squirt was just a drip.”
Summer offers the best weather in the olde country. But for smaller crowds and lower rates, try fall. Either way, you’re in for the smell of your life!
