CANTON—The fur is ready to fly across parks and woodlands of the country as the 2009 squirrel season gets under way. Reported sightings of large Reds and Grays with 10-inch tails have been common, along with the occasional good-sized Fox Squirrel.
Rudy, a Jack Russell Terrier from Akron, Ohio, hit his limit in just 35 minutes at East Side Park. “It was a squirrel stampede out there today. I treed four big Grays in the first five minutes,” Rudy recalled. “They dropped nuts and hauled butts. Man, that was some good squirreling.”
A rare report of a dog actually catching a squirrel has been floating around among sports dogs. Apparently, the mammoth, furry-tipped Black Squirrel was nabbed by a Beagle last Saturday. Unfortunately, the trophy squirrel broke free from the Beagle’s grasp when the dog paused to bark at a dangerous-looking air molecule.
