When to Start Feeding Puppies Wet Food | Puppy Feeding Guide

Reviewed by Dena Bley, RVT

Puppies can typically start eating wet food at 3 to 4 weeks old. They grow so fast! But their little mouths and digestive systems are sensitive when they’re that young, so their food still needs to be easy to lap up and digest.

Once your pup is fully weaned from their mother’s milk, they can eat their food without any liquid added. This is a great time for wet dog food because its aroma is appealing, it's soft on developing teeth, and it's easy to digest.

This guide shows you everything you need to know about feeding wet food to your puppy: when and how to introduce it, the benefits it offers, and how to choose the just-right formula for your fast-growing pup.

Key Takeaways

  1. Puppies can begin eating wet food as they wean, which is typically between three and four weeks old.
  2. Initially, make a gruel for your puppy by mixing their wet food with water or puppy milk and then gradually reduce the liquid.
  3. Most puppies can eat purely wet food (without water or milk) by the time they’re between six and eight weeks old.
  4. Wet food appeals to puppies because of its soft texture, strong aroma, and high moisture content.
  5. Make sure to choose wet food labeled “complete and balanced” for puppies with an AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement.

When Can Puppies Start Eating Wet Food?

Your puppy can be introduced to wet food when they’re between three and four weeks old, as they start to wean off their mother’s milk. They can’t dive into it all at once, though. It’s important to give their digestive system time to get used to their new food.

Start by mixing the wet food with water or a puppy milk replacer (specially formulated powder or milk for puppies) to create a kind of gruel. Reduce the liquid bit by bit until your pup reaches around six weeks old, when they can handle little or even no liquid.

By eight weeks old, most puppies are fully weaned and eating wet food completely on their own. If your pup is already eight weeks old when you adopt them, you can start them on wet puppy food immediately.

But remember that each puppy develops at a slightly different pace. You can tell your particular pup is ready for wet food by watching for signs like showing an interest in dog food, being able to lap from a dish, and not nursing as often.

As always, consult your veterinarian if you have any questions about the best course of action for your puppy.

Why Wet Food Is a Good Choice for Puppies

There are so many good reasons to choose wet food for your growing puppy. Let’s take a look!

Easier to Chew and Swallow

First, the soft texture of wet food is a great introduction to “real” dog food. While kibble can be too drastic a change from milk, wet food is a more natural transition.

Pate and mousse-style formats are particularly great for those early eating days because they’re gentle on developing teeth and gums. They also help your puppy learn how to lap up their meals.

Supports Hydration

Hydration is critical for your puppy’s growing body. Digestion, brain activity, blood flow, kidney function, breathing, and overall health all depend on it!

Wet food contains 60% to 80% moisture, which helps your puppy stay hydrated, especially while they’re still learning how to drink water from a bowl.

More Appealing Taste and Smell

The strong aroma, meaty texture, and rich flavors of wet food are irresistible to pups. Even picky eaters and puppies who have poor appetites or are slow to gain weight!

Provides Complete Nutrition

As long as you choose products with an AAFCO statement confirming nutritional adequacy for growth, wet dog food contains the protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals your puppy needs. It supports healthy muscle, bone, and brain development during those early, critical months.

How Much Wet Food Should You Feed Your Puppy?

To determine how much to feed your puppy once they’re fully eating wet food only, follow the feeding guidelines on the packaging. Remember to divide the daily portions into four meals initially, and then into three meals later on.

That said, because different dogs have different caloric needs based on their breed and activity level, it’s important to ask your veterinarian about the correct amounts for your unique puppy.

It’s important to introduce your puppy to wet food gradually and to be intentional with each step. Here’s how to do that.

Step 1: Create a Soft Gruel

Transition from milk to wet food slowly by mixing them. Try combining two parts wet food and one part warm water or puppy milk replacer, and stir until the mixture has a gruel-like consistency. Then serve it in a shallow, easy-to-reach dish.

Step 2: Encourage Your Puppy to Eat

If your pup is a little wary, help them turn their cautious curiosity into action by dipping your finger in the gruel and letting them lick it off. Then place a small amount in a shallow dish and gently guide your puppy’s nose toward it.

Be patient here! It might take a few days before they really go for this new food.

Step 3: Gradually Reduce the Liquid

Gradually reduce the amount of water or milk replacer over a few weeks as your puppy gets used to their new food. By the time they’re around six weeks old, the gruel should be more like porridge in its consistency. And by eight weeks old, they can be exclusively eating the wet food.

Step 4: Establish a Feeding Schedule

Finally, get into a regular feeding routine. Ideally, you want your puppy to eat four meals a day. Give them 10 to 15 minutes to eat after you offer them food, and then remove whatever's left. The goal is to transition to three meals a day as your puppy grows.

Choosing the Right Wet Food for Your Puppy

You want to give your puppy exactly what their body needs for healthy growth! This means looking for the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement confirming that a food is “complete and balanced” and has a quality protein source listed as the first ingredient.
